The Main Chord Shapes
Here is a selection of the most common chord shapes. These diagrams are laid out as if you are holding the guitar up and have it facing towards you.
Each string is represented by a vertical line. The low ‘E’ string/ thickest string, which is the top string as you hold the guitar in the correct playing position, is on the left hand side of the diagram.
The black dots are the fingers, with your index being finger 1, middle finger 2 etc. An ‘X’ means you don’t play that string, while an ‘O’ means the string is played ‘open’ or without any fingers on the fretboard.
