Acoustic Guitar

If your primary goal is to be able to play your favourite songs on guitar than acoustic is usually the best place to start. For chord-based popular songs, acoustic will generally be more versatile, whether playing on your own or in groups. As always, learning songs will be done in such a way that you build an understanding of chord progressions and song structure, making you more confident and ultimately able to learn songs much faster. For complete beginners, the initial learning process can be slower on acoustic, as it can take longer for fingers to get used to the string thickness/ tension. But if you go about practicing in the right way you will make much greater gains compared to starting on nylon-string or electric guitar. As always the style of music you want to play should dictate your guitar choice (more info can be found on the beginners page). Here are some of the techniques and theory you will be able to learn:

• Proper positioning & holding of the guitar• Basic chords & scales• Barre chords, more advanced scales & chord shapes along the fretboard• Theory behind chord structure & different styles• Strumming, timing & alternate rhythm patterns• Fingerpicking in varying styles• Introduction & theory for different genres (Rock, Pop, Alternative, Jazz, Blues, Folk)• Open Tuning - chords, scales & well-known pieces• Slide/ Lap-steel techniques• Tablature & music notation• Basic theory & techniques to make learning songs easier & faster• Advanced strumming, finger picking & combination styles• Maintaining & caring for your instrument
