Music Theory

After playing guitar for a few years, a lot of people tend to hit a brick wall in their ability to express their creativity. As theory is often overlooked in the beginning stages, many musicians have this exact problem - having the technique down, but not knowing where to go. But the word 'theory' doesn't need to be as daunting as it sounds - musical structure for popular styles only takes a very small amount of knowledge to understand, whether its chords, melodies or solos. The key is being able to see everything from the most basic building blocks of melody and harmony; the framework of every popular song.  When you consider how many legendary musicians have had no traditional training in music theory, it may appear (and is often sold as) some mysterious gift. But behind it all are lives dedicated to honing the craft and understanding of music - what makes them stand out is that they have developed this understanding in their own unique way. This is ultimately the best approach for learning how music works, and helps develop a more natural musicality. That's why lessons are customised to suit how you want to learn, and importantly, the focus is from the perspective of the fretboard rather than the keyboard (how nearly all music theory is taught). Here are some of the areas covered:

• Building Chord Progressions• The 'Three-Chord Trick'• 'Demystifying' Extended, Diminished & Augmented Chords• Understanding Modes & When to Use Them• Choosing the Right Chords for Each Key• Learn How to Hear Keys & Listen Effectively• Playing Chords Outside the Key• Developing Advanced Rhythms• Using Rhythm to Build Musical Structure• Building Tension & Release• Quick & Easy Ways to Build Different Chord Voicings• Writing For a Group• Writing Fingerstyle Arrangements for the Guitar• What Chords & Scales to Use for Different Genres• Chord Substitutions• Creating a Distinctive Melody• Choosing the Right Timing
