Songwriting

Many people I have taught, from complete beginners to accomplished artists, have sought to discover some mysterious 'secret' to songwriting. But there is no real mystery to writing a great song, or even one essential formula for success. It all comes down to understanding the craft, and knowing how to capture the moments of inspiration when they arrive. It also doesn't require a vast amount of theoretical knowledge - some of the most successful songs have be created by writers with a very limited understanding of music theory. It all depends on the style you want to play, how you want to learn and how you want to express your creativity. I've had people producing albums-worth of material after only a couple of lessons on songwriting - and the discovery of a new concept or new technique can be just the spark you need to get going. All lesson are structured in a way to suit how you want to learn and built around the styles you want to work in, with the option of referencing and studying your preferred songs or artists. Here's an overview of some of the areas covered:

• Building Chord Progressions• The 'Three-Chord Trick'• Choosing the Right Chords for Each Key• Choosing the Right Key• Using Chords Outside the Key• Building Tension & Release• Quick & Easy Ways to Build Different Chord Voicings• Understanding Different Genres• Writing Fingerstyle Arrangements for the Guitar• Playing Your Song in a Different Genre• Chord Substitutions• Creating a Distinctive Melody• Choosing the Right Rhythm• How to Find the Right Melody for Your Lyrics• How, When & Where To Use Diminished & Augmented Chords• Writing For Bands• Recording & Producing Your Song
